To deter any would be car thieves make sure that all valuables are removed from your vehicle when parked. Steering locks and car alarms can deter car criminals as will parking in well lit areas and secure car parks.

Don't leave anything on display even an old coat or a sports bag, you may think it's worthless but a thief will break in on the off chance you have left cash or valuables inside. Always lock your car even if you are just popping to the shop.

If you have Sat Nav do not leave it on display, if you can, take it with you. Thieves know your hiding places so if they see a Sat Nav cradle or the marks where it has been they may break in to look for it.

We realise that you will be bringing back a whole heap of stuff when you arrive at uni but don't be tempted to leave it in the car whilst you show your family your new home and especially not overnight!
